Mental Health Assessment and Screening Tools

Course Duration: ONE DAY
Skill development for caseworkers and counsellors. This workshop offers the opportunity to consider the pros and cons of using various mental health assessment screening tools with clients.

It introduces a number of tools and provides practice in conducting them with your clients (or reading the results from other workers) as one approach to informing you about their overall wellbeing. The workshop assists you to use the results to target and plan your work with them.

Four different mental health screening and assessment tools are introduced and participants have the opportunity to practice introducing some of these to clients, scoring those that require scoring and making use of the results to plan next steps.

The four tools are the

  • Mental State Exam (MSE)
  • DASS 21
  • Post Traumatic Stress Checklist (PCL 5)
  • a basic Suicide Risk assessment.

At the end of the day, participants should feel confident to introduce the tools to clients, score them as necessary and develop plans based on the results.

Course content covers:

  • An exploration of participant reaction to the use of such tools with clients
  • Introduction to each tool and how best to use each with clients
  • The opportunity to practice introducing the tools to clients through role-plays and vignettes, scoring as necessary and using the results to plan further work
  • Discussion of associated issues such as trauma-informed work, comorbidity and dual diagnosis and self-care.

This course includes

  • Engaging, up-to-date materials.
  • Take-home reference package and free online resources.
  • All day catering and beverages - with dietary needs catered for.
